Whale Shark Experience In Kona

Fishing in Kona is always unpredictable and sometimes very surprising. Hawaii is the most remote archipelago in the world surrounded on all sides by at least 2500 miles of pristine water. Some days we catch marlin, mahi mahi, ono, tuna. Other days we catch nothing. However, EVERY day we see the most spectacular sights. This week was no different. Fishing about 4 miles off shore we encountered the most spectacular whale shark. This was a juvenile and only about 22 feet long (we’ve seen them as big as 40 feet). When we brought the boat to a stop the whale shark came right to us! They love to have their nose rubbed and just like a puppy dog this fish loved all the attention. An hour later my crew and passenger were in the water playing with the whale shark like they were old friends. This was simply the most docile wild animal we’ve ever met here in Kona. Still can’t believe it was real...
